Ahhhh so lovely to see you truly enjoy one of our neighbour islands in the best ever way. And great you zipped around the island. I cycled it as a race which was great fun especially coming out of the actual town itself as they wound us through the village!
I have so many things I want to do on the island (the armada - once in a lifetime though I cringe at the sea impact), the ever so wonderful Tweed Run (dress in vintage weekend) and to finally conquer the swim to Kostas on the mainland - but the price of accommodation there now is astronomical. So if you've befriended anyone with a room let me know!
The Armata Festival looks and sounds noisy... giving Sydney NYE a proper run for its money. Going to miss this charming stay, bookmarked for the return although there are so many more island cultures to experience. If you ever need a more reasonable option Theo Studios has been simple, clean, friendly, perfect, we even received treats on the owner's name day! 🫶🏻
I'm trying to tri-athlon every Saronic Island! Spetses and Poros officially done. We included mainland Nafplio in the challenge - also done. Aegina doesn't have a triathlon so we made a backyard one with friends! Hydra doesn't have roads but has a swimrun in winter but the ferries don't connect! The logistics are greater than the sporting endeavours I tell ya! 😂
Thanks for the room rec - 72e is v reasonable for Spetses (and that room looks lovely) but when our usual hotel budget is 40e - most parts of Greece are not cheap! I saw someone raving on Substack about a beautiful Mani hotel for "only 115e" and talking about how "cheap" Greece is and wanted to cry for all the locals who can't afford to holiday in their own country.
So fit! I have a good friend back in Oz who's a long distance swimming nut so I'll be sure to recommend the bay/crossing from Spetses to the mainland.
I hear you re: cost of accommodation for locals. I talked to one of the hospitality staff members on the Mani last year and she told me her monthly wage (way too low) and the cost of rent in Athens skyrocketing. I also remember visiting Kythira 20yrs ago and it was MUCH cheaper. AirBnb and Booking.com get richer and richer...
A cheap IKEA fry pan, a good dollop of olive oil. Leaving it on medium-high and for longer, rather than super hot is the trick (and resist the option to keep checking) 😇
Ah I don't use any oil. And it gets quite watery. I cooked some just earlier (your fault), dusted in smoked paprika and nearly spiced us out. Thanks in cheese, will use oil!
