Greece has been on my “desperately want to visit” list for a while. So I really enjoyed the insights and gorgeous photos you shared here! I’m curious, what are some of your favorite countries you’ve visited?
Thanks Emi, hope it’s inspiring a trip! I first visited with family when I was 6, in a campervan. Been calling me back ever since.
Favourite countries? Think we’d need a long lunch catchup to give this conversation justice! I love my home country Australia, with so much still to explore in all its vastness. Norway has left a well-stamped impression. And then there’s……
A great read Josh. I particularly liked the non-cliched views of Athens. I was there a month or so ago and recall the market you describe - the stench of the butchers coming back to me in a flash!
It’s such a fantastic city though. Outstanding for eating and drinking.
I was chatting with a friend who lives local and he said as a rule, meat is bought and used/cooked usually within a day, so farm-ish to table eating, kinda. Thanks for reading!
I felt a little more ‘let in’ this morning at the bakery. The young lady serving me smiled briefly after my cheery “Kalimera” (Good day) … before returning to barely putting up with me 😂
Hahaha, what an accomplishment! Sometimes being treated like the rest, the other locals, is what is being ‘let in’. This reminds me of the veggie store I went to in Thailand often where we lived, and the owners treat me almost like I don’t exist. Which is hard to believe if you know how Thai people otherwise treat foreigners… But I see them treat locals the same way so I just feel honored. I’m one of them 🤣
Far out, you understand the challenges I'm talking about Marola. I've always loved, and will continue to love leaning right on in. "You will like me!" 😂
Omg I LOVE pastitsio! I haven't had that in years... but I remember eating it regularly in ADL and thinking it was the best thing ever lol. Not tomato-y. And the spices added to the ground lamb and the over load of bechamel lol is wayyy better than lasagne. Oh no don't come for me, Italians! Also love the nod to the Greek women RBF. Lol. Sounds like most of the women in Asia tbh haha. x
I have childhood memories of pretty much wanting a bucket of bechamel as a side for my mum’s pastitsio! 😂 The proper goods! My ½ Italian hubby doesn’t get it, and I can only open his eyes to the world of Lasagna 2.0 (as in the UPgrade) so much.
You're so Melbourne! 😉 This is like a hipster guide to Athens but I mean that in a good way! Love watching the video of the galaktoboureko, it seems to be putting up a fight! Is it served warm? And congrats on the nomad visa. We have seen posts from people waiting ages to get this. Does it mean you get a year here?
Too funny, and thank you! Melbourne culture clearly in the backstreet loving bloodline. The ‘G’ was a bit of a saw-through, the perfect road to inner, warmed custard. 🍮
Goodness Josh 🌸wonderfully written . I’m there .. Athens was never my favourite .. but sometime before I leave I may just give it another chance, thanks to your travels & recommendations 🫶
I will be seeing that Galaktoboureko in my dreams… the crunch, wow.
One of life’s most satisfying saw-throughs Diana! A shoutout to @Diary Of A Custard Lover for leading me to the crunch.
Still dreaming myself!

I’ve never been to Australia! Been to New Zealand twice but yet to make it just a little further.

It was intense Joel… so meaty!

Love the observation about the women 😁

Hahaha that’s a great attitude! ‘And you WILL smile back at me’ 🤣 I love that and do the same
Oh my God! My mouth was salivating as you sliced through the crunchy filo pastry. Yum 😋
I was like a five year old in a lolly shop. Pupils properly dilated! 😂
😂😂😂🥳
A delicious read in so many ways. Xx to you both

Wait the farmers markets didn't make it to this!?
Ok full transparency… I had it written, but removed it. Thought I was becoming a bit too ‘oh here Josh goes again… market addict!’ 😂
That's what we are here for: the full Josh!

Thank you Maria, and yes it’s proper chaotic, but there’s something awesome about connecting in with the big city (dusty) heartbeat.
