Love this one Josh! I was also a child of the Royal Easter Show in Sydney and a regular on the ‘Cha Cha’ and the ‘Pirate Ship’. But fast forward 30 years and I am now terrified of heights. That said, we did the Brienz Rothorn 2 years ago and I absolutely loved it!
I loved this wonderful guide to the Swiss alps. As someone who has spent time in the Austrian alps, it really made me want to cross the border again, but this time to see what’s the mountains in Switzerland’ have to offer. Gorgeous photos as always Josh!
Ah yes you know what I’m talking about Kara… those sweeping vistas and soaring peaks properly take your breath away! I’ve heard Austria offers similar beauty. Thank you for your kind words!
Thanks Camila! The vista made for quite the photogenic subject. It’s bonkers how tough workers of previous times were to build these engineering wonders… lucky us!
What a fantastic mountain adventure, Josh! 🏔️ I loved reading about the history of the Niesenbahn and seeing those incredible views across the Bernese Alps. The 11,674-step staircase sounds especially intimidating! As someone who enjoys hiking in Hokkaido, I really appreciate how you combine the scenery, history, and practical tips in your stories. 💚
Too kind with your comments thank you! Hiking is such a great hobby to explore our world. I won’t be doing the stairs race though… leave that to the extreme adrenaline junkies.
Haha, I think I'll leave that staircase race to the adrenaline junkies too, Josh! 😂 I'd much rather take my time enjoying the mountain views. That's the best part of hiking for me! 🏔️
I hadn’t realised Adriano was Swiss and thought Italian. What a contrasting heritage you both have! I think the back to back contrasts would make it fun. And guess who is a total train / narrow gauge funicular geek?! Me?!
Great write up and very informative [and very jealous !!! ] also good pictures. You will be back I am sure. Take care in Mexico much love Dad, Lizzie and Lola XXX
Glad you enjoyed coming along for the ride! It's inspiring to learn that engineering designs and builds like this was possible without a single computer being plugged in. And... what a view!
One tip for budget conscious travellers heading to the peak. Pack your own lunch and enjoy the world’s finest picnic vista… a LOAD cheaper than chalet dining!
Ps the frutiger font comment. Tell me you’re a designer without telling me you’re a designer… 😜
The original poster designs for promoting the Niesenbahn were so beautiful! You've reminded me to share that in Notes this week. 🧑🏻💻
Did you know we have some narrow gauge in Greece!? Maybe I should write about it!? But then in typical Rowena brand it's got a tragic backstory.
Old transport posters are always so classy.
If the maintenance schedule is anything like Salty’s, I’ll probably skip the Greek experience. 😂
😝

The Cha Cha! And Showbags! 🙌🏻 I tried booking Brienz but it was full to the tilt. You must have been organised… 2027 bucket list. 🚂

so this race up the steps then? was running not your thing :)
running vs. clambering up thousands of steps? I’d take the marathon option any day! 😂
Beautiful pictures! And such an interesting story of how this was developed

You had me at narrow gauge!
And yes we are a proper blender worth of heritage. Adriano's parents are Italian and Austrian – to add another layer to the family cake!
And a delicious cake heritage too! 😆
